What Is a Panda German Shepherd?
The Panda German Shepherd dog is basically the German Shepherd you know and love, except for interesting colour combinations, which are not common in this breed. It has black and white markings, especially around its eyes, similar to the panda of the same name.
Contrary to the meaning of the word panda, not all panda German Shepherds puppies are black and white. Many of them can exercise a third colour, usually tan, distributed throughout the body.
Panda german shepherd size
The german shepherd panda has a muscular, elongated body and solid bone structure. They have a rounded forehead and a black nose. They have almond-shaped eyes. Their ears are wide at the base, upright and pointed. They possess an average weight of 77 to 85 pounds. Their males have a height of 24 to 26 inches and females have a height of 22 to 24 inches.
Panda German Shepherds, like their standard colour counterparts, originated in Germany, where they kept sheep until the late 19th century.
With their industrious and intelligent nature, the panda german shepherd puppies have become one of the preferred dog breeds for the disabled, as well as for police and military assistance.
Are panda German shepherds purebred?
What makes the panda German Shepherd dog distinct is that it carries a mutation of the KIT gene, which leads to its unusual markings. Otherwise, it is the same as regular-coloured German Shepherds, and its colouring has no bearing on its pedigree.
According to the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, the panda shepherd puppy is a recent mutation, first discovered in a female German Shepherd born in 2000.
Studies showed that the dog was purebred but had the mutated KIT gene, which is said to be dominant.
The Panda Shepherd is a Dalmatian German Shepherd that appears in a GSD pedigree. It is 35% white, while the remaining colors are black and tan. It is a spontaneous mutation, and its ancestors did not have Bai Demu. The parents of the black/tan/white female puppies are the purebred black German shepherd bitches and the purebred black and tan German shepherd fathers.
There are some other dog breeds that look like Panda like the chow chow panda dog which is not a purebred breed.
Are Panda Shepherds Rare?
No doubt, panda Shepherds are the rarest dog’s breed to find. It is pretty hard to give birth to this breed with the breeding of two shepherds. They have a single GSD bloodline, and thus it is not a designer breed.
German shepherd panda has a piebald color mainly with 35% white marking on its body and the remaining 65% a combination of black and tan color. The color of the coat of a dog depends on the genes and the code of the doggie. Thus, the mutation of genes alone can’t change their coat color too much extent. However, you can find small changes in the dog’s coat color due to genetic mutations.
Piebald refer to the white markings on a panda GSD. In a Panda German shepherd, the piebald gene determines the proportion of white marking in a panda german shepherd puppies. That means a copy of the piebald gene is crucial in a dog with a white color in its coat, and that too only a single copy of that as two copies will increase the white markings on a Panda German Shepherds drastically.
This piebald gene is quite rare to find in the dog, and so it is hard to find a dog breed with a coat resembling that of a Panda.
What causes a panda German shepherd?
The Panda Shepherd Dog is a piebald type of German Shepherd that has occurred in a single GSD bloodline. It is 35% white, while the remainder of coloring is black and tan. It is a spontaneous mutation and has no white German Shepherds in it is ancestry.
The parents that produced the black/tan/white female puppy were a purebred black German Shepherd dam and a purebred black and tan German Shepherd sire. The rest of the puppies in the litter were standard looking black and tan German Shepherd pups.
The sole black/tan/white puppy also had two blue eyes. In order to protect the image of her breeding program, the founding breeder Ms Cindy took the piebald puppy to Ohio State University Veterinary Hospital for genetic DNA testing to find out the exact cause of the anomaly. The parents of the pups were confirmed as purebred GSDs with no White GSD or other breeds in their lines. This was a purebred GSD that was born with piebald coloring.
The same sire and dam that produced the piebald puppy were bred three more times and all the pups were born with the traditional black and tan coloring. A lot of canine genetic coat color testing was done on the piebald puppy who was named Frankie. When Frankie matured she was bred to a traditional colored black and tan GSD. Out of the four puppies born, three turned out to have black/tan/white coats but lacked blue eyes, while the fourth puppy was the traditional black and tan coloring. The black/tan/white German Shepherd Dogs were given the name Panda Shepherds or the panda colored german shepherd.
Panda German Shepherd Genetics
The first-ever recorded Panda mutation occurred spontaneously in a female dog, Lewcinka’s Franka von Phenom, in 2000.
A study published by UCDavis in 2016 found that the panda marking is the result of the dominant mutation of the KIT gene or the CD117 gene.DNA tests conducted by the American Kennel Club proved her lineage to be, for a fact, a pure German Shepherd Dog.
Panda is a dominant gene. In its homozygous state, the mutation is considered embryonic lethal as no live dog has been observed with it
